As I have been working on my Vanasse database , I have found myself cursing Marie Rose Martin dit Pelland , realizing
all the time that she was quite innocent of the problems that she would cause for later researchers . What she did ,
she did for love or so one would want to believe
In 1771 Marie Rose Martin dit Pellant married Joseph Vanasse dit Vertefeuille and a number of children were born of this
union . When Joseph died , she remarried in 1777 and her new husband was Joseph Vanasse dit Bastien . She had a
number of children from her second marriage .
Here you had a family where some of the chidren were Vanasses dit Vertefeuille and some were Vanasses dit Bastien . Well
what do you think happened - well some of the children referred to themselves as Vanasse dit Bastien Vertefeuille and subsequent
lines of the family which were really Vanasses dit Bastien referred to themselves as simply Vertefeuille alone .
This has caused havoc with genealogists . There is roughly 8 different Bastien families of which Vanasse is one . Then
there are the Vanasses dit Vertefeuilles and a Bachand dit Vertefeuille family and some of this last family go simply by Vertefeuille
. All the Vertefeuilles live in the same area of Quebec .
Thank God that there are only a few Vertefeuille lines . To add to the confusion one line of this Vertefeuille ( Vanasse
dit Bastien Vertefeuille ) family immigrated to Ste Croix County in Wisconsin and reverted back to the original Vanasse
surname . Who said genealogy was boring !
